Our workplace culture includes a variety of fun evenings and events organised here and then. It was once more time for one of these sessions, time for something new and unique – we have had our fair share of sauna evenings and glow bowling events.
So, on the day before Independence Day on 5th December 2016, we headed for Pornainen to drive a tank!
Owner of MIL-Safarit Oy, Mika Tanner, welcomed us and presented his company’s activities. The location had some kind of wheeled and tracked terrain vehicle tearing up the terrain. The MIL-Safarit premises also had a defence and war history museum that had plenty of related items, but also museum vehicles.
Thinking of the day’s agenda, we had come to a decision that the T-55 battle tank had to be experienced, and at least one of us had to try driving it! The lucky driver was chosen by means of a competition whereby the person to disassemble and reassemble a Suomi machine gun would get to drive the tank. Juuso was the quickest, so we all jumped in to enjoy the ride Juuso gave us in this 39-litre diesel-powered soviet beast. Hearing protectors were definitely necessary, as the tank decisively powered along the route with huge clouds of diesel smoke behind us! For a first-timer, Juuso controlled the tank really well!
After this true Soviet-style experience, we fried sausages over the campfire and were awarded certificates in the museum marking our achievement. Then we heaedd for the capital and hit the streets of Helsinki for its nightlife.
